The image was created by the Cordovan artist Alonso Gómez de Sandoval in 1735. It has been the center of devotion for the people of Cordoba, being present in some of the most important local historical moments of the last three centuries. In 1795, a silver box with two relics from the Basilica of Saint Peter was introduced into its chest, effectively turning it into a reliquary.
