Saint Zoilo, a young man well-regarded among the Cordoban Christians, was captured with the aim of making him renounce his faith and thus serve as an example for other believers. When this failed, the Roman authorities decided to torture him by removing his kidneys through his back, a moment which is depicted. As the executioner proceeds with the barbarity, the martyr gazes at an angel descending from heaven, bearing the victorious crown and the palm of martyrdom, symbols of the Glory achieved.
