24. Martyrdom of Saint Secundinus, Bishop of Castulo
Saint Secundinus, Bishop of Castulo during Roman times, was flogged until the bones of his back were visible. This work masterfully captures all elements of the scene. Secundinus, tied to a beam, is whipped by two executioners while his episcopal garments - miter, staff, and cope - lie on the ground. An angel appears from a burst of glory with the victorious crown and palm, both symbolizing the glory achieved by the new martyr.
