It is part of a collection of six canvases on the life of the Virgin, all attributed to Palomino and dated to the beginning of the 18th century. The work depicts the passage of the Flight to Egypt, in a composition that recalls other works of the same theme by the author. Mary and the child occupy the center of the scene, accompanied by Saint Joseph and the graceful angel. The countryside landscape and the walking posture of the characters highlight the idea of journey to a safe place.
"When the magi had departed, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, 'Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.'" Matthew 2, 13-15 19-23
