Part of a collection of six paintings about the life of the Virgin, all attributed to Palomino and dated to the beginning of the 18th century. The work shows the presentation of the child in the temple, carried by Mary who presents him to the old man Simeon. Jesus is the most illuminated character and the center of the composition, with Joseph carrying a pair of doves as an offering to the right, and a theatrical character peeking into the scene behind a curtain to the left.
“There was then a man in Jerusalem named Simeon [...] to whom it had been revealed by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God [...].” Luke 2:22-35
